Self-taught, drawing from an early age, was dormant for many years picking up the pencil again in 2009 as an escape from some difficult personal issues.
The pencil turns into a pen and the process becomes more intense, even compulsive, drawing all of the time, every day.
One day in 2011, a Psychology professor discovers Ruben drawing, as usual, during one of his lectures, and asks if he had ever thought of doing an exhibition.
From that point it was just a question of time until Ruben inaugurated his first solo show in 25 sales, a spread in a major Portuguese newspaper “Publico”, and the starting point for begins to produce work on wood and canvas with even greater energy than he had found in the pen and paper.
Ruben’s subject matter ranges from religion to sexuality, to political and social issues, and though the topics explored are serious, he works with a palette that’s charged with energy and often maintains a direct and somewhat child-like character in his paintings.
